Daniel Tawse lives on the northeast coast where stories are told with heaps of heart and good humour. He spent his childhood going on adventures in the wilds of Northumberland, and teenage years writing diaries about the stuff that mattered. Both proved to be invaluable when it came to writing stories. Daniel started creating characters as a pre-teen at Sunday drama club at Tynemouth Priory Theatre, and carried this on as a drama student at Newcastle College, and then later at the Arts Educational Schools, London. Writing prose began as a passion project but quickly blossomed into more. Daniel self-published his novella, Fairy Boys – a story about a queer teenager from Newcastle, who experiences gay romance for the very first time – in 2019 and then went on to sign with Hachette Children’s Group in 2022. His first YA novel, All About Roman(ce), was published in 2023 and was listed for the Waterstones Children’s Prize the following year. Two other titles quickly followed: Emmy Star is So Everything (2024) and This Book Will Make You Cry (2025).
Daniel is an advocate for queer representation in literature for young readers and continues to create characters with this in mind. When he isn’t authoring, he can be found playing jazz standards on his beloved piano, his favourite pieces belonging to the Great American Songbook. He’s also a keen historian and holds a MA degree in British History from the University of Northumbria. Daniel is pleased to report that he still enjoys adventures in the wilds of Northumberland, where he can usually be found walking barefoot on a beach somewhere. He also continues to keep a dairy, as writing about what matters is just as important to him now as it has always been.
