It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Len Deighton, military historian and novelist, who passed away peacefully on Sunday 15 March 2026, just weeks after his 97th birthday, with close family at his bedside.
An intensely private person, Len was a loving husband, father and grandfather who would have found this announcement unnecessary. Ysabele, his wife and partner of sixty years, his sons Antoni and Alex and their wives, and his five grandchildren are devastated by their loss and grateful for the time which they had to spend with him.
Tim Bates, Len’s literary agent at PFD, says: “Len was a Titan. He was not only one of the greatest spy and thriller writers of the twentieth century but also one of our greatest writers in any genre. His career spanned a dizzying range of styles and forms, from meticulously researched military history and era-defining thrillers, to epic historical novels and influential food writing. Len was a self-taught polymath, who was as comfortable writing about complex engineering structures as he was describing the best way to make a Pot-au-feu. He was also a brilliant illustrator and an accomplished filmmaker. Len’s writing, in whatever genre, was witty and erudite, often very funny and always very cool. He was truly a master.”
