Sarah Bilston, who received her D.Phil. from the University of Oxford in 2000, is a Professor of English Literature at Trinity College, Hartford (CT). She is the author of The Awkward Age in Women’s Popular Fiction, 1850-1900 (OUP, 2004) and The Promise of the Suburbs: A Victorian History in Literature and Culture (Yale UP, 2019 — a “Choice Outstanding Academic Title”). She has also published two novels with HarperCollins (US) and Sphere (UK), Bed Rest (2006, published in nine languages) and Sleepless Nights (2008).

She is currently completing a new book with Harvard University Press, The Hunt for the Lost Orchid, on the nineteenth-century mania for orchids, and an interactive digital map that explores the richness and surprising diversity of an 1890s suburb. Bilston has also written numerous articles on Victorian literature, history, and culture in scholarly journals and is the recipient of both a summer stipend and a Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
