Andrew J. Bayliss is Associate Professor in Greek History at the University of Birmingham. Andrew has published extensively on Sparta and Ancient Greece, including After Demosthenes: The Politics of Early Hellenistic Athens (Bloomsbury, 2011), Oath and State in Ancient Greece (De Gruyter, 2012), co-written with Alan H. Sommerstein, The Spartans (OUP 2020), and The Spartans: A Very Short Introduction (OUP 2022). Andrew has also published commentaries on the fragments of the lost Spartan authors, including the war poet Tyrtaeus, for Brill’s New Jacoby Online. Andrew has written for BBC History Magazine, Sky History, and recorded podcasts for BBC History Extra, Dan Snow’s History Hit, and Noiser.
