Tom Hanks to star in war drama Greyhound, based on The Good Shepherd by C.S. Forester

Pre-production has begun on Greyhound, the forthcoming film based on the 1955 novel The Good Shepherd by C.S. Forester. The screenplay has been written by Tom Hanks, who will also star as the troubled naval officer commanding a destroyer, the USS Greyhound, during World War II.

The story takes place as the Greyhound is escorting a military convoy across the Atlantic Ocean in 1942, when the shipping lanes between America and its European allies were imperilled by German submarines.

As well as The Good Shepherd, the English novelist C.S. Forester is known for the Horatio Hornblower series, and The African Queen, adapted into the 1951 John Huston film starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn.

Filming for Greyhound aboard the USS Kidd and at other Baton Rouge locations is expected to start in March. Aaron Schneider (Get Low) is attached to direct, and the film will be produced by Filmnation alongside Hanks’ company Playtone. Sony have purchased distribution rights.
