Steven Murphy

Steven Murphy is an American writer and arts consultant living in London.

He graduated with a degree in literature from Georgetown University and, in the course of his career, he has held senior management positions in publishing, music, and the art business.

Steven spent 20 years in publishing, including seven years at Simon & Schuster and ten as the CEO of Rodale Inc. He was recruited by EMI Music and spent a decade there, managing a record label group.

Before becoming an arts consultant and fulltime writer, Steven was the chief executive of Christie’s for five years. At Rodale and at Christies, Steven launched their businesses in many parts of the world; in particular, India, China and Asia, which afforded him a deep engagement in those regions. He has earned a reputation as a highly creative executive with a particular gift for articulating a company’s narrative and for creating a culture in which a diverse group of artists and talent can succeed.

Dedicated to the creative community, Steven served for 10 years on the board of PEN America and was a trustee of the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Today, Steven writes short stories and contributes articles on culture and politics to various publications, including AirMail, GQ, and Litro. He is working on his first novel, a love story set in the US in 1970 when the nation was, like today, tragically divided.
